Export a supported STL mesh as an OBJ file for software and workflows that accept Wavefront geometry. Inspect the preview before purchasing the full-quality output.

Why convert STL to OBJ

STL and OBJ can both represent polygonal surface geometry, but they are used by different applications and pipelines. STL is familiar in 3D printing and stores triangle facets. OBJ is a text-based Wavefront format that can represent polygon geometry and may be accompanied by material and texture reference files in workflows that use them.

Converting from STL to OBJ is useful when a mesh editor, visualization tool, or content pipeline expects OBJ input. The conversion changes the file representation, not the underlying design intent. The STL's triangles remain a faceted mesh; the conversion does not create smooth CAD surfaces or editable parametric features.

Convert and check the result

Upload an STL file no larger than 50MB. StlFixTool reads the mesh and prepares an OBJ output. When the conversion completes, inspect its interactive low-resolution preview to check that the overall shape is present and appears correctly positioned.

The preview is capped at 30,000 triangles for web viewing and is not the full-quality output. Rotate and zoom to review the model. If the source contains defects or details that are hard to see in the preview, use a destination mesh application to inspect the full file after download.

When you are satisfied with the preview, pay $2.99 once to unlock the full-quality OBJ. Payment is handled through Paddle. There is no account or subscription. Uploading and previewing do not incur a charge, and unpaid job files are deleted within 60 minutes.

OBJ materials and associated files

An OBJ file can reference a separate material description, commonly an MTL file, and image textures. A geometry conversion from STL has no color or texture information to recover, because ordinary STL geometry does not carry those visual assets. Do not expect the resulting OBJ to contain appearance information that was absent from the input.

StlFixTool's conversion is intended to provide the mesh geometry in OBJ form. If a downstream workflow requires material assignments, textures, vertex colors, named parts, or a particular polygon structure, add or prepare those elements in a suitable application and check what that application supports.

Scale and mesh quality

STL often has no dependable unit declaration. The geometry is converted, but different programs may interpret imported OBJ units according to their own conventions. Check the object's dimensions in the receiving application and set units as needed before modeling, printing, or manufacturing.

The conversion does not guarantee that an input mesh is watertight, manifold, or suitable for slicing. It transfers the supported mesh geometry into another format; it is not a repair tool. If a mesh has open edges or inconsistent normals, use a repair workflow and inspect its effects before relying on it.

When this conversion may not be enough

If an application requires a native CAD solid or editable design features, OBJ is not a substitute for STEP or the original CAD model. If it requires textures and materials, an STL source does not provide those details. If it expects a specific OBJ variant or coordinate convention, check that requirement in the target software.

A malformed STL, invalid triangle data, or a file over the size limit may fail to convert. Use an unmodified valid STL export where possible. After downloading, open the OBJ in the intended application and verify shape, scale, orientation, and any referenced companion files before using it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does STL to OBJ cost?

The preview is free. The full-quality OBJ download costs $2.99 as a one-time payment.

Does conversion add textures or materials?

No. STL does not normally contain OBJ materials or textures to recover. Add those assets in an appropriate application if your workflow needs them.

Will the OBJ be smooth or parametric?

No. It remains a faceted mesh based on the source triangles and does not become editable parametric CAD.

Will OBJ dimensions match the STL?

The conversion transfers geometry, but STL unit metadata is not dependable and applications can interpret units differently. Check dimensions in the destination software.

Can I convert a damaged STL?

Supported files may convert even if they have mesh defects, but conversion does not repair them. Use a repair workflow if defects matter and validate the output.
