Inspect an STL model as geometry, not just as a filename or a flat preview image. The browser-based viewer lets you rotate and examine the mesh, review basic measurements, and save a screenshot without sending the selected file to a server.
See the model as a triangle surface
An STL model is a surface representation made from triangular faces. Curves are approximated by facets, and dense areas can contain many small triangles. A 3D model viewer makes that structure easier to inspect than a filename, thumbnail, or screenshot because you can change the camera angle and look at the object from multiple directions.
Open the STL Viewer and choose the file from your device. The selected geometry is loaded in the browser. STL and OBJ are supported for mesh inspection; this viewer is focused on the surface shape and does not need the original CAD application or its project files.
Navigate and examine details
Drag to orbit around the model, scroll or use the trackpad to zoom, and pan to shift the view. Reset the camera if you lose the object. Wireframe reveals facet boundaries, which can help you see whether a curved region is represented by a coarse or dense mesh. A grid is available for visual orientation; it should not be treated as a dimensional scale.
Inspect the model from below as well as from above. A top view can hide a cavity, a thin wall, or an interrupted surface. Wireframe is a visual aid, not an analysis of every defect. For critical geometry, load the file into dedicated mesh or CAD software and use its inspection tools.
Use mesh statistics as context
The viewer reports properties such as triangle count, bounding dimensions, surface area, and estimated volume. A count tells you how many triangles describe the loaded surface; it does not measure design correctness. Dimensions show the extent along the model axes, but do not identify a specific feature or confirm a tolerance. Surface area depends on the triangulated surface and is not the same as material volume.
The measurement display uses millimetres as a convention because STL files often lack reliable units. Confirm scale against a known feature in your CAD program or slicer. A mesh needs suitable closure and orientation for volume to be meaningful. If the shape has boundaries or self-intersections, volume can be unavailable or misleading.
A viewer is not a slicer or a CAD editor
Use the model viewer to make a quick visual review: identify the part, check the broad shape, look for an obvious missing component, or capture an angle for discussion. It does not calculate toolpaths, support structures, clearances, or print time. It does not tell you whether the material or process is appropriate for a real part.
A slicer translates a mesh into layers and machine instructions. CAD software works with design constraints, measured dimensions, and feature history. A mesh editor changes the triangle surface, for example by transforming or repairing the mesh. Choose the tool based on whether you need to inspect, manufacture, or change geometry.
Export, screenshots, and privacy
Save a PNG screenshot when you need to share the current view. The saved image includes the displayed view, not a copy of the STL. The viewer does not export a modified model because it does not edit the geometry. To alter the file, open it in an editor and export a separate result so that the original remains available.
The viewer reads the selected mesh on your device and does not upload it. Browser memory and graphics capacity vary. Dense scans or large triangle counts may load slowly, especially on older devices. If the model does not appear, try resetting the camera and confirm that the file can be opened in another local mesh application.
Choose a workflow after inspection
If the model looks correct and the goal is printing, open it in a slicer to set units, orientation, supports, and layer parameters. If the file is damaged, use a repair process and compare the resulting mesh rather than overwriting the source immediately. If the dimensions or design need substantive changes, ask for the native CAD file or use a suitable CAD workflow.
An STL file cannot generally recover the smooth surfaces, editable parameters, or design history of the source project. Converting it to another mesh format does not add that information. The viewer is a useful first check, but final validation belongs in the software and process that will actually use the model.
Frequently asked questions
What can I inspect in an STL model viewer?
You can orbit and zoom around the mesh, view its triangle structure, and review reported dimensions and other mesh statistics.
Does the viewer edit or export the STL model?
No. It is for inspection and PNG screenshots. Use a mesh editor to change and export geometry.
Can a viewer confirm that an STL will print?
No. Inspect it in the intended slicer and review its layer preview and analysis before printing.
Does STL contain the model's design history?
No. STL describes a triangle surface and does not preserve the original parametric CAD feature history.
Can I inspect the underside of a model?
Yes. Orbit around the model to inspect its underside and other surfaces from different angles.
